Christmas Grace
by Ruth Elaine Schram
When my granddaughter Natalie Grace was born, a melody began to form—a tender Christmas lullaby that would become a lasting gift. Written in honor of my newest grandchild, this piece captures the wonder of new life arriving during the most magical season.
The gentle harmonies and heartfelt lyrics reflect the blessing of family and the grace that a new child brings into the world. There's something profound about welcoming a baby near Christmas—it connects us to that first Christmas, when another newborn changed everything.
A Name Full of Meaning
Her name, Natalie Grace, seemed to write the song itself. "Natalie" comes from the Latin word for "birthday" and is traditionally associated with Christmas Day. And "Grace"—well, grace is at the heart of everything we celebrate at Christmas.
The melody came easily, as if it had been waiting for the right moment to arrive. Sometimes songs take months of work, but this one flowed naturally, like a lullaby should—simple, tender, and straight from the heart.
For Every New Life
While I wrote this piece for Natalie Grace, I've been touched by how many families have adopted it for their own Christmas celebrations. Parents have shared stories of singing it to their newborns, and churches have used it during Christmas Eve services to honor the gift of new life.
That's the beautiful thing about music—a song written for one beloved child can become a blessing to many.
